David Lynch receives top French award

Film director David Lynch has received the top French civilian honour, the Legion d'Honneur.

The maverick American is celebrated for his cult films, such as Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive and The Elephant Man. He also made the landmark TV series Twin Peaks.

France's President Nicolas Sarkozy said he was a director of "immense talent", according to a palace spokesman.

The spokesman added that Sarkozy remarked upon "the demanding approach of David Lynch, a creator who challenges not only the style and form of filmmaking but also the cinematic genre itself".

The French have also honoured reformed British rock band The Police, who are to become Knights of the Order of Arts and Letters. Sting and co. are playing in Paris this weekend.
